Pedal to the Medal

Hey guys!  The weekend has flown by as usual and I admit most of it has been trying to get those miles in again.  I’m about 3 weeks out from Viva Bike Vegas, and pretty much next Sunday will be my last full day to ride *gulp*  I will be going out of town for some exciting events (details to follow)!  If you want to check out my rides, read on

Saturday morning Chris and I were up early to get ready for Pedal to the Medal, a ride benefiting Special Olympics Nevada.  I kind of signed up for it last minute and it was only $30.  It was nice to donate to such a great cause and get in some killer hill training as well.

The route looks harmless, oh yes, but let me tell you it was a challenge!!!

And here is the elevation profile, man Mt. Potasi was a doozy!!  I was pretty slow but I’m glad I made it up!

It was pretty darn hot too, so I made sure I had those electrolytes and fluids.

It was a challenging ride but gorgeous!!  We used to go up to Red Rock for hiking as a kid all the time and no matter how many times I visit Red Rock, it’s always amazing! (iPhone pictures don’t do it justice)

Vegas has a lot more than just the strip!

I ended up pushing a little too hard in the beginning, which I must remember NOT to do for Viva.  One minute your pulling at the front of a pack and then you steer off the front for a rest and they leave you in the dust!  argh, my legs just didn’t want to keep working and then I still had that darn mountain.  Most of the ride I was by myself and it’s always a bit slower when you’re not in a group.

Overall stats weren’t too bad:

  • Miles: 50
  • Time: 3:08
  • Avg: 15.5 mph

After the ride I brought along a ReGen in a lunch box and it was soooo refreshing!  I’m so sad because we are all out now and Chris drank most of them!

They also had Raising Cane’s for us, which is good, but I wasn’t too excited to munch on some fried chicken fingers after a ride, but hey, I guess it was protein and sodium.

When we got home, I was about ready to eat again and to be honest I can’t remember it all!

I received some Chobani Greek Yogurt to sample and decided to whip one of those bad boys out.  I love Greek yogurt because it’s packed with protein at 14g per serving.

I usually prefer the plain varieties of yogurt and mix my own fruit in, but this one was actually tasty.  It is still way too sweet for me (17 g of sugar), but great after a ride.  I mixed in a scoop of cottage cheese and topped it with frozen cherries and pistachios.

Gotta love the creamy, irresistible texture of course!

I do love their containers because they have enough room and are perfect for extra toppings.  I always have to have some kind of other crunch and munch with yogurt.

Frozen cherries on top of some CHO is the bomb.  Just sayin’.

Man Sunday morning when the alarm went off at 5am, I did not want to get out and go on another ride, but I knew that this would be beneficial for Viva.  Get out of bed Kristen!!!!

And my legs were definitely talking to me, mostly saying how they hated me.  I’m sorry legs.

I ended up hooking up with a Green Valley Cyclist ride out to Boulder City.  I rode down to the start and was planning on riding back home, but it was getting hot and my legs weren’t feeling springy, so I decided to cut it short.

It was a great group today (I’m on the far right in blue).  Love riding with these guys!!

The first part of the ride I felt pretty darn good though.  There was one hill that defeated me and my legs got their revenge.

  • Miles: 46
  • Time: 2:42
  • Avg: 16.8 mph

Dang, that ride was fast!  The group was really pushing for this one and it’s amazing how it can increase your pace.  I could never keep that up on my own.

Riding home I had some good inspiration 🙂

Heck yes!!!!!!  (I like to talk to and pump myself up while riding hehe)

Whew, well I’m about pooped and sad to see another weekend fly by.

I am excited though because next week my mom and step dad are coming to visit from North Carolina!!!! yay!  Even though I won’t have too much time with work, thesis, cycling and such, I am really looking forward to spending time and seeing them again 🙂  I miss them a lot.

Hope you have a nice week!

  1. I just designed my workout schedule for the next 3 weeks until my race (which is piddly, but still!)… and it’s going to take me practicing morning workouts–it’s pretty inspiring to see others like you getting down to it, even when they want to sleep in. Thanks for the kick in the bum!

  5. Sounds like you got in some good rides! I am sure you have to start that early so you miss that heat. Can’t wait for it to start cooling down.
I love Chobani yogurts. I am not normally a fan of flavored yogurts either but the pineapple flavor is very delicious!

  8. Loove Chobani! And your cycling always inspires me! I’m cycling 10 miles in a triathlon soon, which Iknow is nothing compared to you! Awesome that it benefits the Special Olympics too 🙂

  9. Looks like an intense ride, but it’s so great that you and Chris were able to support the Special Olympics!

So fun that you could ride with a group, too. I think that would be a lot more enjoyable than pushing through the miles alone.

Hope you enjoy your family’s visit!
